Mountain peak Datca

Mountain peak Datça

We had mentioned the border of these two beautiful climates in the Datça peninsula, surrounded by the Aegean and the Mediterranean, and it had also been mentioned that climate diversity enriches the vegetation.

As we mentioned in our previous travel notes, we headed towards the mountains and hills, passing through the lush, rich gardens of Datça. We were excited to see the diverse plant life created by the Mediterranean and Aegean climates.

It was thrilling to discover that more than 10 plant species are unique to the Datça Peninsula, and there are also 2 species found nowhere else in the world.

Due to its location, the Datça Peninsula and its surroundings have an interesting flora.

In ancient times, Rhodes and the eastern Greek islands were part of a single landmass, which is why many common plant species are shared between these islands and the ones here, with many of them being confined to this region.

As you explore the mountains of the Datça Peninsula, gazing at the expansive seas below and watching the sun dance on the water, you will encounter a wide variety of herbs that have numerous uses, from being ingredients in dishes and appetizers to being used in medicinal preparations.

Herbs such as radika, arapsaçı (wild spinach), silcan, eşek helvası (a wild herb), istifno, nettle, coriander, and wild sea beans, along with the young leaves of the melengiç (chilembik) tree, are used in salads, pastries, appetizers, and meat dishes.

At Mavi Beyaz Hotel, starting from the 2021 summer season, the restaurant “Lokanta Tevfik” led by master chef Tevfik Alpaslan will feature these special local herbs as part of the regional cuisine.

While wandering through the mountains, you will also come across various herbs, plants, and wild fruits that will capture your affection with their beauty.

You will find golden herb and sea lavender, which can be used in your home’s decoration, while herbs like sage, thyme, and narpuz will add a delightful aroma and flavor to your teas and meals.

As you explore the dense and hard-to-pass forests in the northern part of Datça, you won’t be able to resist tasting wild strawberries.
